"Fully automated" and "passive" are the words that sell online business courses. This report checks them against 46 real ways to earn online and asks, for each one: what can actually be automated, what AI is genuinely good for, and what stays your job however many tools you connect.
What you get
- 46 models in five groups: e-commerce (dropshipping, Amazon FBA and FBM, print-on-demand, marketplaces, Etsy), content and audiences (YouTube automation, Shorts, affiliate, newsletters), digital products (templates, assets, KDP, courses, micro-SaaS, APIs), services and four others.
- Seven ratings per model: an automation score from 0 to 100, difficulty, saturation, how useful AI is, risk, capital needed and time to first revenue.
- Who does what: for every model, what AI helps with, what can be automated, what stays with you, what works, what to watch out for, and a one-line verdict.
- The four "passive income" classics compared: YouTube automation, dropshipping, Amazon FBA and print-on-demand, with what each automates and where it gets stuck, plus Amazon's dropshipping rule and YouTube's monetisation rules, including the new thresholds announced for 2027.
- The money side: two worked examples of a $100 sale that keeps $6-7, a worksheet for your own revenue-versus-profit numbers, and which models to test for which goal.
- Warning signs: the FTC case against Automators AI, which sold "AI-powered" passive store investments, and the full list of costs to count before you pay anyone.
How it was made
A first draft came from an AI research tool. We rewrote it in English, checked the platform rules and the cases it cites against their sources in October 2026 and kept only figures a source contains. The ratings are editorial judgements, explained in the report.
Good to know
This is research for orientation, not a promise: nothing here predicts what you will earn. It pairs well with the AI Income Market Report 2026, which goes deeper into AI-specific demand data. Read the free sample: how the ratings work, the key findings and the four classics compared.
